“ I have had the privilege of having Mbithe as my coach for the last several months. Her coaching style is incisive and deliberate. We began the coaching sessions during the COVID-19 pandemic. The immediate challenge was to try to get clarity and direction on how to lead in a crisis. It was a difficult time for me because it meant leading a team through a turbulent season, while trying to ensure that the interruption to the business was kept to a minimal.
In her usual incisive style, Mbithe began the sessions with a 360-degree analysis of my leadership. To my mind, the purpose of this exercise was to ensure that we first determined my leadership strengths and weaknesses. Armed with this knowledge, we would then determine the specific areas that I needed to work on in as far as coaching was concerned; not just during the pandemic, but also beyond the pandemic.
In my opinion, personal development is one of the best gifts that one would give to oneself, particularly in the leadership arena. This is because life is not static and each season, one has to rise to a new level to meet the challenges of that season. In investing in a coach, it has helped me to raise my level of awareness, and this in turn means for me, approaching each issue that I face as a leader with a high level of awareness.
The coaching sessions don’t feel like coaching sessions; they feel more like sitting to have a cup of tea with your long best friend! I personally don’t buy into the narrative that a coach has to be “tough” for results to yield results. Yet, the outcomes speak for themselves because when one looks at the results retrospectively, one realises that one has met all the coaching objectives. Dr. Mbithe’s coaching style is non-intrusive, and non-judgmental. I would, and unreservedly, and highly recommend her.
