“ I have had the privilege of having Mbithe as my coach for the last several months.

Leading through a turbulent season

“ I have had the privilege of having Mbithe as my coach for the last several months. Her coaching style is incisive and deliberate. We began the coaching sessions during the COVID-19 pandemic. The immediate challenge was to try to get clarity and direction on how to lead in a crisis. It was a difficult time for me because it meant leading a team through a turbulent season, while trying to ensure that the interruption to the business was kept to a minimal. In her usual incisive style, Mbithe began the sessions with a 360-degree analysis of my leadership. To my mind, the purpose of this exercise was to ensure that we first determined my leadership strengths and weaknesses. Armed with this knowledge, we would then determine the specific areas that I needed to work on in as far as coaching was concerned; not just during the pandemic, but also beyond the pandemic. In my opinion, personal development is one of the best gifts that one would give to oneself, particularly in the leadership arena. This is because life is not static and each season, one has to rise to a new level to meet the challenges of that season. In investing in a coach, it has helped me to raise my level of awareness, and this in turn means for me, approaching each issue that I face as a leader with a high level of awareness. The coaching sessions don’t feel like coaching sessions; they feel more like sitting to have a cup of tea with your long best friend! I personally don’t buy into the narrative that a coach has to be “tough” for results to yield results. Yet, the outcomes speak for themselves because when one looks at the results retrospectively, one realises that one has met all the coaching objectives. Dr. Mbithe’s coaching style is non-intrusive, and non-judgmental. I would, and unreservedly, and highly recommend her.

Problem-Solving During a Pandemic

“ The onset of Covid19 came with professional challenges, such as reduced donor funding, reduced networking space, reduced access to the most vulnerable population’s reduced physical interaction with teams/reduced team supervision, low projects impact, and personal challenges such as reduced investments, reduced savings, high household expenditures, time management among others. Coaching with Dr. Mbithe was about discovering the hidden problem-solving skills. They enabled me to define my own solutions to various challenges I faced. Thanks to the coaching I am now more aware about my SWOT. I have become better in planning for both professional and personal goals. It was very valuable for both personal and professional development and definitely value for money. As a coach, Mbithe is self-aware, respectful, resourceful and a good listener. These are traits that make her an excellent coach. I view coaching as a calling and Mbithe is doing this very well. Keep up the good work. “

Preparing for Transition

I sought Mbithe's services as I was transitioning from one job to another. I was leaving a multinational tech company where I had been leading a business team of over one hundred people across 18 countries in Africa. As I transitioned out of the job and into another somewhat similar role in the insurance sector, I spent much time reflecting on the last 4 years with my organisation. I was keen to understand my successes and failures, to evaluate how I functioned as a leader, to assess my strengths and my weaknesses and to figure out how I should work with these during the next phase of my career. Mbithe's coaching and coaching methodologies were instrumental in highlighting my current management style, my strengths and my blind spots very concisely. Beyond that she gave me great insight into understanding the last decade of my life. I have gone on from the sessions confident about my strengths and how to harness them, and cognizant of the blind spots and ways of mitigating them. I have realised how much I have changed as a leader over the years. The last 360-degree evaluation that I had done with this level of thoroughness was 15 years ago and the change has been interesting to observe. I now lead a leaner, more geographically dispersed team and I don't second-guess my management style. The 360 feedback and subsequent analysis and coaching sessions have assured me of what works and I am leaning heavily on this. Indeed, as a direct result of the reflection period during my transition (of which this coaching session was a significant part) I have made the same gains in this new job in a period of 6 months that had taken me 3 years in my immediate previous job.

Finding Footing and Confidence as a Company’s Youngest Executive

Being the youngest in management within the organization and also the youngest to occupy the position of accountable manager, I have found myself always trying to prove my worth and relevance which made me a bit insecure especially when Covid 19 hit and we had to scale down operations. Through coaching with Dr. Mbithe I was able to develop a social enterprise “My Aviation Story” which is a platform I use to engage well accomplished personnel in the Aviation industry, including Dr. Mbithe who was among the first guests I hosted, and have them tell the story of their journey in the Industry to get to where they are now. The coaching sessions have enabled me to articulate my vision and mission more clearly, broaden my scope for both guests and target audience and also think through and make strategic partnerships and networks. On the work end, through the networks I have made with my social enterprise I have been able to better manage challenges at work and be more secure and confident in my position. I would highly recommend Dr. Mbithe as a career coach as she really gives her all in terms of time, resources and also networks. Her coaching technique is more personal and doesn’t only stop at the end of each session, she also steps in to assist practically sending material and content that is relevant and also linking you to her networks who may be of assistance.

Re-inventing Oneself

I met Dr. Mbithe while working at Kenya Airways (KQ) as the Cargo Pricing and Revenue Manager. In the beginning, coaching was a requirement for most top leaders in the KQ business but eventually I sought coaching sessions from Dr Mbithe because she has a wealth of experience on how to handle challenges given she was  one of the top senior managers in Kenya Airways and over the years had brought us a broad spectrum of people to train on various expertise that the business needed. At the time I felt I needed to re-invent myself in my then position and boost the skills of my team members. This is why I sought her coaching. I did not get a promotion but I performed above my previous capabilities and I took on projects like mentoring and coaching the management trainees for cargo, and handled that program to the end thanks to the coaching sessions I had with Dr Mbithe. The 6 management trainees I trained hold successful cargo management positions currently. Mbithe's approach suited my personality because she allowed me to explore new ideas I had and encouraged me to try different methods to approach any challenges I experienced. The sessions we had were not only encouraging but inspiring because of her ability to listen carefully and process what someone is saying and to ask the right questions The questions she would ask me would provoke me to reflect deeper and get a better insight into the things I found challenging. I always felt I left the session feeling more settled and focused and clear as to what my next steps would be and would look forward to completing the tasks ahead in order to come back for another session having successfully accomplished my targets.
